Weaving Structure

Dec 2019

Weaving structure is a grid shell structural system composed of continuous elastic rods bearing bending forces developed by Assoc. Prof. Weixin Huang’s studio at Tsinghua University School of Architecture. It is aimed to offer a design and construction system organic in its form and mechanism, easy to construct, and with high adaptivity.

The collaborative studio course of 5 students consists of two projects. In the first one, the Donut Pavilion, I developed and installed the interactive lightings. To utilize codes and signals to make architecture interactive has been challenging and fruitful. A 2m-high model of the pavilion was constructed on the campus.

^ Project One: Donut Pavilion, built in Tsinghua University Campus

^ Project Two: Doorway, model

I led the design of the second project, a doorway for a shopping mall. Thanks to the flexibility of the weaving structure, the design fits existing emergency exits and fireproof shutters well.

A general contribution of mine to the weaving structure research initiative is that I improved the weaving pattern with a unified ordering code for the rods at the joints (part 4 of Doorway development).
