A Wi-Fi and Video Data-Based Study on Spatial-Temporal Characteristics of Rural Space Behavior

Jun 2021

The betterment of rural living environment is a primary component of contemporary governance, with rural space behavior being its key manifestation. Inspired by the ongoing technological upgrade of environment and behavior studies, making use of Wi-Fi and video data, this article explores the spatial-temporal characteristics of the space behavior at two villages: Jiangjiahutong and Xiaochuanfangyu in Jizhouqu, Tianjin.

Utilizing Wi-Fi positioning technology, processing and analyzing respective data, the article summarizes the usage of important locations and the traffic organization patterns in-between. Machine learning clustering of the locations showcases their changing functionality over time.

Utilizing video recognitin technology, processing and analyzing respective data, the article tracks the demographics and traffics of the villages. The usage of important locations is also recorded, consistent with that of the Wi-Fi data. Close-ups at important public spaces are created to assess their functionality.

Through quantitative analysis at different scales, this article summarizes the spatial-temporal characteristics of the space behavior at the two villages and their public spaces. As a technology validation study, it discusses the advantages and limitations of the two technologies as well as their future application in the “collecting-processing-analyzing” framework of environment and behavior studies.
